A Typographic Dialogue on Form, Content, and Authorship

The Project "CREATE" is an experimental grayscale booklet that synthesizes two seminal essays by Michael Rock: “Designer as Author” (1996) and “Fuck Content” (2009). The objective was to create a unified visual narrative that explores the inherent tension between the message (content) and the medium (form). By treating type as a plastic, sculptural element, the project challenges the traditional boundaries of readability and design authorship.

The Creative Strategy: To mirror Rock’s argument that "form is content," I utilized a strict grayscale palette, stripping away the distraction of color to focus entirely on composition and weight. The design process involved pushing the limits of legibility through:

  • Intentional Distortion: Stretching and shearing letterforms to reflect the "stretching" of meaning over time.

  • Layering & Transparency: Creating "typographic collisions" where different paragraphs overlap, forcing the reader to actively participate in decoding the text.

  • Kinetic Layouts: Utilizing a dynamic grid that shifts throughout the booklet, echoing the evolving nature of design theory.

Key Contributions:

  • Experimental Typographic Treatment Spearheaded the manipulation of type through distortion and layering, transforming static text into an expressive visual landscape.

  • Editorial Design & Layout Managed the end-to-end book design process, from conceptualizing the page flow to final print production and binding.

  • Narrative Synthesis Curated and sequenced text from two different decades to create a new, cohesive conversation between the essays.

Core Takeaways:

  • Form as a Language This project reinforced that the way a word is presented can be just as impactful as the word itself.

  • Challenging the Grid Working on "CREATE" taught me how to break traditional layout rules intentionally to drive a specific emotional or intellectual response.

  • Materiality in Design Developing a physical booklet emphasized the importance of pacing and rhythm in an analog format—skills that translate directly into digital UX and storytelling.
